5 Minutes with Christian Limmer – Interview One
Building Strong Teams in Life Sciences in Germany
Christian Limmer is the Co-Founder of Constares, an executive search specialist in the German Life Sciences industry. I first met Christian in April 2025 at a Talentor Partner Meeting in Prague and really enjoyed the energy, passion and client focus that he has.
Doug: Since when have you been helping companies in the life sciences sector with talent challenges, and why did you choose this industry?
Christian: My interest in life sciences began in my teenage years, when I volunteered as a paramedic. That experience highlighted the critical role of pharmaceuticals, diagnostic tools, and medical technologies in saving lives.
When the opportunity arose to enter the life sciences field as a recruitment consultant, it felt like a natural fit. The industry’s combination of scientific innovation and ethical purpose aligned with my values, especially given my background in theology. Many professionals in this sector are driven by the goal of improving or saving lives, which continues to inspire me.
Doug: What talent challenges do companies in life sciences typically face in Germany?
Christian: Challenges vary depending on the size and maturity of the company. Larger and mid-sized firms often struggle with access to highly specialised talent; they know what they need, but traditional job postings are ineffective, making headhunting essential.
Smaller companies and startups often face budget constraints that prevent them from hiring senior-level experts. As a result, they may bring in junior professionals who, despite their motivation, lack the experience to build scalable systems—ultimately limiting growth potential.
Doug: How do you align hiring with long-term business strategy?
Christian: At Constares, we adopt a holistic recruitment approach, starting with the question: What problem is the client trying to solve? Only after that is clear do we craft the appropriate solution.
This could involve hiring a permanent expert, or alternatively, bringing in short-term contract expertise to establish systems, followed by a permanent hire for continuity. In some cases, we advise clients not to hire at all and instead recommend trusted external partners if that makes more strategic and economic sense.
Doug: How important is company culture in attracting and retaining top talent?
Christian: Company culture is critical. The alignment between a candidate’s values and a company’s working environment is essential for both motivation and retention.
Smaller firms often have strong internal cultures but lack visibility externally. In these cases, we act as cultural translators, helping candidates understand not just the job itself, but how the company operates and what it represents. Communicating this effectively can be a key differentiator when competing for talent.
Doug: What client feedback are you most proud of?
Christian: The most meaningful feedback is long-term client trust. Some of our largest clients have worked with us continuously for over 20 years, beginning with placements I made in 2002 and 2003. That trust carried over when I founded Constares and continues today.
These clients include large international corporations, and we’ve supported multiple HR leaders within the same organisations. This continuity reflects the quality and consistency of our work. It is rare for a client to engage with us only once and not return, which I see as the strongest endorsement of our approach.
