As the golfing season starts to get into full swing, we met with Roger Wolfe, Managing Director for YUMAX Ltd, Master Agent and Golf Consultant for Nikon in the UK. Nikon is one of the main Patrons of The Open and has had a strong brand presence and association with the golf sector for a number of years.
Chris: How long have Nikon been sponsoring the Open?
Roger: Nikon has been involved with The Open since 1987. There is a perfect synergy between the heritage of the Nikon brand and the heritage of The Open Championship and we feel it has been a great partnership for all these years.
Chris: What are the benefits of Nikon sponsoring The Open?
Roger: There are the obvious benefits of the brand presence through the advertising boards, the shop in the tented village, the renting of binoculars to patrons as well as being able to use the corporate hospitality facilities for entertaining clients.
However, one of the main, and less visible benefits is the number of professional photographers in one place for the whole week. We gain access to the media centre and are able to offer advice to all the photographers on their equipment. We also offer free trials of our brand new products to the photographers for the week. This is a great chance to get these new products in their hands and show them the value they can add to their work.
Chris: What is your most memorable moment at The Open in recent times?
Roger: It would have to be 2009 at Turnberry. Seeing Lee Westwood perform so well (hitting that bunker shot) and coming so close again. I hope we Lee win a major soon. Then there was Tom Watson rolling back the years as well. You couldn’t have written a better script!
Chris: What is your favourite open venue?
Roger: It has to be St Andrews. It has a completely different atmosphere to all the other venues. You would even call it a carnival atmosphere at times. There is something special about the Home of Golf.
Chris: Do you get to meet any of the players during your week at The Open?
Roger: Nikon sponsor Ian Poulter so it is always good to catch up with Ian during the week. Last year we also had Under Armour athlete Jordan Speith for 2 hours at a media event in the early part of the week, worked with some of our Srixon ambassador GMAC and I bumped into Colin Montgomerie who is the ambassador of our swingSURE™ insurance business in the media centre and congratulated him on his recent Senior Majors success.
