5 Minutes with Jordan Taylor, Executive Search Consultant in our Technology Practice

Welcome to Collingwood. Can you tell us about your career to date, how have you ended up with Collingwood? 

Thank you. Having graduated from university with honours in business management, I have always had ambition to help individuals and companies better themselves. Starting in sales, I was keen to progress into a role that enabled me to add value, moving into talent acquisition has allowed me to improve not only the future prospects of the candidates I work with, but also the potential of my clients by ensuring they attract the best talent possible. Having spent nearly 5 years in talent acquisition working with clients on a variety of assignments, from apprenticeship programmes to senior appointments, I felt it was time for a new challenge. With the knowledge I have acquired, I felt I could add more value to my clients - Collingwood not only offers me a platform to do this, but also has a track record of providing amazing service and results to an impressive international client base.  

 What specifically attracted you to Collingwood? 

From my first meeting with Collingwood it was evident to me that we are very well aligned in our focus to understand and meet the needs of our clients. In an industry where it is not always the case, Collingwood truly believe in putting the client first and, in turn, by building trust and strong partnerships, they achieve fantastic results. That really excites me!

There was also a good synergy between the markets we have experience in. My background is in technology, having completed many assignments in the embedded systems space. Collingwood have operated successfully in the technology arena since being established in 2005 and have a strong track record in appointing leadership positions for clients ranging from entrepreneurial start-ups through to globally recognised technology brands. I am really looking forward to helping continue that success. 

Why do you and your clients prefer to engage in a retained search rather than conventional contingent recruitment methods? 

Organisations typically engage with recruitment and search firms when they have an immediate need, it could be a member of staff has resigned, or a new project needing an inspirational leader to ensure long term success. However, the clients that I love working with are those that appreciate the difference that engaging the right search partner can have on long term success.  

My clients understand that the most important asset to their business is normally their people and rely on my experience and guidance to ensure they attract, retain and continually develop effective leaders in their business.  

Whenever I work with a client, I want them to make a decision at the end of the recruitment process that fills them with excitement. For this to happen, it is really important that they are confident they have acquired the very best candidate available to them at any given time and retaining the right search partner ensures that this is the case. Committing to us allows us to do the same in return, and subsequently spend the required time engaging the best candidates, not the easiest or most active candidates. 

It goes back to what I mentioned earlier, building trust with clients to leverage better results - that’s something I truly believe in. 

What do you look for in a client to build a successful partnership? 

Firstly, I think it's critical that any business understands that when they engage a search firm, they need to do so with the intention of working together as partners to achieve the desired result.  

I really enjoy working with committed clients, who have genuine interest in investing in their business to improve immediate, medium and long term performance. With any search you will only get out of it what you put into it, not just financially but also in terms of time. With that in mind I look forward to working with clients that truly value their employees, understand the impact that hiring the right people has on business performance, and is therefore willing to invest their time into ensuring our partnership is a successful one.  

For me, it really isn't about one position and filling a single vacancy. It's about how I can work long term with my clients to improve their talent acquisition and employee performance, of both new and existing employees.  

What has been your proudest career achievement to date? 

That’s a really tough question! I think in general we are very fortunate to be given an opportunity to truly make a difference to the lives of the people we work with. In general I think that is what makes me proudest, furthering the careers and lives of the people I work with, whether that’s a promotion for a brilliant candidate or building a really successful team for a client – it’s great to know that the work we do makes a difference.

I think my proudest achievement must be helping a client of mine grow a very established technical team. Having been part of an acquisition the year before, it was important they grew the team in line with project demands but doing very little recruitment in years prior and being in a less than ideal location meant that their employer brand wasn’t strong enough to attract the desired calibre of candidate. After a three-month contingent campaign that turned up no results, I worked with them to develop their employer value proposition and agreed a clear and consistent message to take to their target market. Having drawn up a shortlist of high calibre, headhunted candidates several additions to the team were made – it’s now great to see their business flourishing.
