Group Head of Procurement - FMCG Manufacturer
Our client is a privately owned FMCG manufacturer in the UK, supplying home consumables to UK and European markets. They have a market leading product portfolio of both own label and branded products, supplying to supermarkets, DIY retailers, as well as a vast network of independents.
With a turnover that has more than doubled over the last five years, they plan to continue this significant growth by increasing market share; opening in new markets, as well as acquiring new businesses.
THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Our client runs three main manufacturing sites across the UK. Each of these sites needs to be developed into world-class manufacturing facilities in order to help them achieve and fulfill the demands of their rapid expansion plans. This had to be supported by strong supply chain management, including all the manufacturing sites having a strong and reliable supply of raw materials. All procurement was being conducted on a 'local basis' at each site.
In order to achieve better economies of scale and efficiencies, a strategic decision was made to centralize all procurement; helping to deliver stronger supplier relationships, as well as improving their current terms of business.
As a result of our existing client’s new strategy, a new role, for a Group Head of Procurement, was required.
Coming from a large volume, fast-paced, consumer products background (food or non-food), the successful candidate would oversee the centralization of procurement for raw materials, large volumes of packaging, as well as transport. Working closely with the Site General Manager's for each manufacturing site, as well as the Operations Director, the successful candidate would be responsible for initiating and implementing a new procurement strategy. Working closely with current suppliers, identifying new suppliers, agreeing to new terms of business, and developing new product specifications.
Adhering to our principles, Collingwood commenced the headhunt from afresh, by identifying potential professionals within the given parameters, and approached those individuals, establishing positive relationships. At the same time, we conducted a thorough market mapping exercise in the procurement teams of locally-based food and non-food FMCG manufacturers.
From our targeted headhunt, we identified a long list of potential candidates which we met face-to-face; conducting competency based interviews and behavioral profiling. From these interviews, Collingwood presented a final shortlist of 4 candidates.
Not only did they have the right skills set to succeed, more importantly, they demonstrated passion, energy and determination to succeed in our client's fast-paced culture.
After client interviews and a final seal of approval from the board of directors, the successful candidate was appointed. Collingwood helped develop an attractive package with our client ensuring an effective offer stage was achieved.
