Chief Executive - British Hydropower Association

The Client

The BHA promotes the hydropower industry in the UK and abroad and aims to increase the awareness of its quality and scope in the wider world. Hydropower, or water power, is one of the most reliable, predictable and least environmentally intrusive of all renewable energies. The BHA strives to ensure that its potential is realised.

The business challenge

After the announcement of the long-serving incumbent's retirement, the BHA sought to appoint a high-calibre Chief Executive to lead the association to sustainable future growth and further contribute to the political environment that underpins the member's ability to develop the hydropower industry. With a lifetime career in hydro behind him and a technical know-how that was the envy of the industry, the incumbent would be a hard act to follow, however with a progressive approach to the appointment the BHA chose to define the brief based on the candidate’s ability to leverage political influence and drive innovative commercial strategy for the benefit of the members, rather than a technical expertise in hydropower. To this end, Collingwood was appointed to conduct a confidential search for C-level executives and board Directors of relevant trade associations in the quest to identify a suitable CEO.

The Solution

Using a range of research methods, Collingwood set to work developing a broad target List of suitable organisations. After careful consultation with the client about each potential target, our Project Manager began making a number of confidential approaches to senior business leaders within each respective organisation. Before long, a long list of interested candidates was established, all of whom were invited for a face-to-face interview with the consultancy team. Using a range of competency assessments we determined the four most suitable candidates to present to the client as a shortlist.

The Result

After inviting the shortlist for panel interviews at the BHA Annual Conference, the most suitable candidate was invited on a full day assessment including a tour of several hydro installations across England and Scotland. Having decided the candidate was the person to drive the BHA to the next level, an appointment was made and the CEO was installed. Collingwood was integral to the smooth onboarding process as the candidate exited his previous tenure and through the early days of employment.
