The frustrating commute to work is apparently still top of the list of daily stresses that office workers would happily ditch.

According to the not-for-profit organisation Work Wise UK, British workers have the second longest average daily commute in Europe which can add an entire working day each week.

"Add to this the misery, tension and delays of traffic congestion and overcrowding on trains, tubes and buses, and now the prospect of travelling to and from work in the dark for many months: it is no surprise that many succumb to depression and despondency," said Work Wise UK's Chief Executive, Phil Flaxton.

When MORI conducted a survey, it found that a quarter of office workers spend between one and two hours a day commuting to and from their place of work. Almost half rated it as the most annoying aspect of their job, alongside office politics.

So the case for rural and home working continues to gather strength, not just among those juggling work and families but with the younger generation too.
Many, it seems, would cheerfully swap wine after work for a stroll in the fresh air at lunchtime.

Promoting a healthy work-life balance and shorter journeys to work was paramount in Collingwood's hunt for the perfect office location. They found it at Portal Business Park on the fringes of Tarporley, one of Cheshire's leafier villages.

"In my previous job, it used to take me an hour to drive six miles into Manchester City Centre, park and then walk to the office," said Collingwood Headhunter Daniel Frost.
"Even though the distance is further, I can now get to work so much quicker, park outside the office and benefit from being in a pleasant location with great views across the golf course."

Commuting is a costly business according to Work Wise UK which claims Britain is losing billions in lost productivity through time wasted sitting in traffic.

That is why finding the prefect rural setting was top of the list of priorities for Collingwood's Managing Director Doug Mackay.

"No one wants to spend unnecessary time commuting. You don't need a city location to run a successful business these days and you get more office for your money in the country," said Doug.

"It's a great motivator too. We spend a significant portion of our lives at work so it's important to make sure the environment is the best it can be."

"Our clients and candidates want to come to us because it's a chance to get out of the city and away from busy roads for a while."

So while the internet and mobile communications may sometimes feel like a heavy chain tying employees to their jobs, they have freed people to work anywhere and at any time, saving money and sanity.
