Managing Director – Consumer Products Packaging
Our client is a privately owned, worldwide market leader in the manufacture of specialist consumer packaging. With a UK manufacturing site supplying the whole of the UK market, our client has a strong and established customer base, built on long term relationships and high levels of customer service. With continued investment in the manufacturing facility the business had a strong foundation for continued success in the future.
THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE
After 13 years with the UK business the current Managing Director was looking to retire. However, with no internal succession plan in place the Managing Director looked to gain Collingwood’s help to source and identify a replacement to lead both the Commercial and Operational sides of the business. With the company profile and product being in such a specialist sector, a difficult task to headhunt a replacement lay ahead.
The new Managing Director needed to have a strong mix of both Commercial and Operational experience. With the business built on a foundation of long term and solid relationships with their customers, the new Managing Director needed to ensure that the high levels of quality and customer service were maintained. With such a strong reputation in the market, built over many years, strong commercial acumen was needed to ensure continued sales and profit growth were achieved.
The individual also needed to have a strong manufacturing background. Overseeing the manufacturing team, they needed to ensure that they were receiving competitive prices from their raw materials suppliers, were manufacturing to the highest quality, as well as being able to identify any requirements for capex investments on site, or the need to introduce any new manufacturing principles.
Collingwood conducted a confidential headhunt into the consumer packaging sector. Through our targeted headhunt we identified a longlist of candidates from which we conducted detailed competency based interviews along with behavioural profiling. We also looked to understand their technical capabilities when it came to product and manufacturing knowledge.
Collingwood presented a shortlist of 5 candidates, from which 2 candidates progressed to a final interview at the Group’s European Head Office with the owners of the business. An offer was then made to the successful candidate.
Collingwood managed the offer and contract negotiations before agreeing a start date with both parties. The new and outgoing Managing Director’s then worked alongside one another for one month, resulting in a successful and streamlined handover and on-boarding process. Collingwood then kept in regular contact with the new recruit to ensure a smooth transition had been achieved.
